The Command Performance
In 1995, recognizing the resources that the Mystic Krewe of Apollo- Birmingham had at it's disposal, King and Queen Apollo XIX, brought to the Birmingham community "King and Queen Apollo's A Command Performance."
The concept was a simple one. Queen XIX (Sha Sha Glamour), already a well known and much beloved entertainer, in her own right, would ask her fellow entertainers and friends to come together and donate their time, energy, and talent to stage a festive night of entertainment and all proceeds, from admission to the show to the entertainers' tips, would be donated to a local Birmingham charity.
These talented people readily answered the call and with that, the annual tradition of "A Command Performance" was born.
Since it's inception, numerous area charities have benefited from this special evening. Among those are Birmingham AIDS Outreach, A Babies' Place, and The JASPER House Project. In 2004, King and Queen Apollo XXVIII broke all fund raising records when they staged their "Command Performance" at the Summerfest Cabaret Theatre. Featuring 31 entertainers, including the reigning Mr. and Miss Apollo - Birmingham, over $7,000.00 was raised to be donated to Birmingham AIDS Outreach.
